C54CST Chip

C54CST Hardware Structure

C54CST chip is Texas Instruments' TMS320C54xx chip which ROM contains a set of most demanded SPIRIT CST telephony algorithms tied together by telephony framework. SPIRIT CST software was licensed by TI from SPIRIT.
C54CST Software Structure

C54CST software consists of the most demanded SPIRIT CST telephony algorithms and open, flexible Framework which allows the user to easy control those algorithms on different abstraction layers.

Data communication algorithms
  • V.32bis/V.32
  • V.22bis/V.22
  • V.42
  • V.42bis
    Telephony signaling
  • DTMF detection
  • DTMF generation
  • Caller ID types I & II
  • Call Progress Tone Detection (CPTD)
    Voice processing
  • G.168 line echo canceller
  • G.726 ADPCM compression
  • G.711 PCM
  • Voice Activity Detection (VAD)
  • Automatic Gain Control (AGC)
  • Comfort Noise Generation (CNG)
  • C54CST Operation Modes

You can control C54CST algorithms from a host processor (Chipset mode), or build a one-chip solution around C54CST with your application running inside C54CST RAM (FLEX mode).

    Chipset Mode
In chipset mode, the ROMed algorithms are controlled via UART by AT-commands from a Host processor. For example to dial number 123 the Host processor just needs to send command ATDT123 to C54CST.

    FLEX Mode
In FLEX mode, developers can create their own applications that use ROMed algorithms of C54CST and place those applications into available RAM of C54CST. Thus it is possible to create complete solutions that are based on single C54CST chip.

C54CST chip has 40kW of internal RAM. Depending on what algorithms are used, 27-35 kW of C54CST internal RAM are available for developers. See the detailed table below.

SPIRIT CST algorithms in use RAM memory available for developers
No algorithms running (C54CST RAM) 37 kW
CST Voice Mode (CPTD, DTMF, Echo Canceller, G.726 activated) 35.7 kW
    CST Data Mode 1 (V.32bis/V.32/V.22bis/V.22 and V.14) 32.8 kW
    CST Data Mode 2 (V.32bis/V.32/V.22bis/V.22 and V.42) 30.7 kW
    CST Data Mode 3 (V.32bis/V.32/V.22bis/V.22, V.42 and V.42bis) 26.9 kW

    Telephony add-ons for C54CST

SPIRIT already offers a set of software Add-ons for FLEX mode that add more telephony functionality (vocoders, G3 fax, etc.) to C54CST solution.

Note: SPIRIT is not licensing C54CST chip (i.e. hardware). This chip is shipped by TI and its distributors. For more information please visit TI site at www.ti.com/cst.
